TK on the Podium!
Thornley Kelham Motor Racing had a successful weekend in Monza, Italy with our client's 1964 289 AC Cobra coming third overall. Qualification for the 90 minute race went well, with the car 4th on the grid, although a few seconds of the pace of the leading cars as the differential ratio was probably a little short for the high speed Monza circuit.
After a solid (rolling) start, the two-driver team were up to 3rd in the first lap, holding this position throughout the race distance, although a well driven and very agile Lotus 17 was snapping at the Cobra's tail for the first few laps, especially through the slower Lesmo corners and the chicanes. A clean pit stop and driver change matched with lap consistent times brought the car home to a podium place.
The well-known and extensively campaigned Cobra has had an extensive mechanical re-build and race preparation by Thornley Kelham, with the engine rebuilt by Pete Knight. This is the first time the car has run competitively since the re-build, so the team were thrilled with the result.
