My first classic was a Frogeye Sprite which provided sizzling summer fun, top down, rallying around the endless cornfields of Illinois, Michigan and Iowa getting hopelessly lost. It came back with me to the UK but sadly had to go when the boys came along.
Growing up in Africa and Australia, our cars were chiefly old and reliable 4 x 4s with readily-available spare parts. My family's safari company owned a fleet of VW minibuses in which most of our holidays were spent watching game through the roof. I’m now the proud owner of a 1956 23-window VW Microbus Deluxe which has been painstakingly restored for many more happy safaris. My grandfather was a car aficionado who owned a succession of Mercedes in Kenya during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, many of which are now sought-after classics. I discovered recently that he participated in the 1949 and 1951 Mille Miglia.
It is a real inspiration to work with such a passionate, skilled and dedicated team of guys here and I've gained a huge appreciation for the stunning cars we are so privileged to restore - works of art on wheels.
