In the 1950s, Max Hoffman almost single-handedly turned the American market onto the beautiful agile sports cars of Europe, including Porsche, BMW and Alfa Romeo. The exotic allure of cars from this part of the world was so enticing that Porsche even sold a number of 356s to the American market badged as ‘European’.
At Thornley Kelham we have looked back – reviewing the original design of the 356 chassis, developed around 1950, as the basis of our Porsche 356 European SL project. But we have done so looking forwards. Our thorough examination of chassis strength and structure, of front and rear suspension systems, and of the steering and braking systems has led to a reengineering programme which can be individually tailored to match the purpose of each car.

MODEL HERITAGE
From the very beginning, the 356 proved that Porsche’s beauty was more than skin deep. Lightweight, aerodynamic and meticulously engineered, it was as quick on the circuit as it was graceful on the road. The early aluminium-bodied cars built in Gmünd would go on to win their class at Le Mans in 1951 - Porsche’s very first appearance at the race - and dominate in rallies and endurance events across Europe. Those victories established the principles that define the marque to this day: precision, reliability and performance born from intelligent design.
Unquestionably beautiful, the original 356 captured hearts from the moment it appeared. It was a car for those who valued understatement and purity of form - a car that looked as good on an Alpine road as it did outside a Paris café.
The Porsche 356 European SL celebrates that enduring spirit. A fusion of classic style and modern engineering, it distils more than seventy years of Porsche heritage into a car built for today - and for the generations to come.
Painstakingly hand-formed from aluminium alloy by master craftsmen using traditional coachbuilding techniques, each Porsche 356 European SL body is a sculpture in metal - faithful to the purity of the original yet refined in every surface. Every panel is assembled on a precision jig to guarantee dimensional accuracy and perfect alignment, achieving the tight, consistent panel gaps that define Thornley Kelham craftsmanship.
Seam welding throughout the structure adds strength and rigidity, and external joints are smoothed to perfection, creating a seamless, almost liquid form that feels both classic and contemporary.
Perfecting each body by hand takes more than 2,000 hours - a testament to the passion, patience and meticulous attention to detail that shape every Thornley Kelham European.
